Dermaplaning eliminates dead skin and peach fuzz to reveal baby soft skin and a luminous, healthy complexion. How does it work and why should you get it done? We answer all your questions!

What’s the secret to baby soft skin free of peach fuzz? Skin so smooth that serums and moisturizers seep right in and makeup glides on like silk? The not-so-secret treatment is dermaplaning and while it’s been around for years, it is still being discovered by throngs of smooth-complexion seekers. A safe and simple procedure, dermaplaning not only eliminates fine facial hair but deeply exfoliates to restore your glow.

How does dermaplaning work and what are the benefits? Here are all the answers to your questions about this safe, effective, skin-smoothing treatment!

What is dermaplaning?

First, let’s talk about what it is. Dermaplaning is mechanical exfoliation where the aesthetician uses a surgical-grade scalpel to remove the outer layers of dead skin and fine vellous hair (aka, peach fuzz) to reveal super soft skin that more easily absorbs facial serums and moisturizers.

How is it performed?

First, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. This will loosen dead skin and allow for a deeper exfoliation. Next, the aesthetician will use a scalpel to abrade the skin’s surface using light, feathering strokes. The process is completely painless. Your job is to simply lie still. Once all areas are covered, the aesthetician will apply a soothing mask followed by the appropriate serum, moisturizer and sunscreen.

What is the downtime?

Dermplaning has zero downtime. You will need to wear sunscreen after the treatment (although you should always wear sunscreen!) to reduce chance of redness.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

Besides the instantly smooth, luminous complexion, dermaplaning has additional longer term benefits as well. By removing the dead epidermal skin cells, skincare serums can penetrate more readily into the deeper layers and thus, stimulate faster cell turnover. Dermaplaning is also ideal when prepping the skin for procedures such as laser treatments or chemical peels. The treatment helps to diminish rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring and fine lines and wrinkles. The overall benefit is a more refined, glowing complexion.

How often should I have it done?

Dermaplaning is safe to have done as often as every two weeks. If you want to keep your smooth, fuzz-free complexion, every month is adequate.

Will my peach fuzz grow back thicker?

Absolutely not. This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear about dermaplaning. No, no, no! Superficial facial hair grow back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment. If you have dark, coarse facial hair, we recommend laser hair removal to nip that in the bud for the longer term. Dermaplaning can be used to remove coarse facial hair, but keep in mind that it will grow back the same way.

What’s the difference between shaving and dermaplaning?

People often think that they are one in the same. They are not.  Dermaplaning is performed by trained skincare professionals using a surgical scalpel on tautly stretched skin. Most razors have two blades that much duller than a surgical blade. Dermaplaning requires short strokes at a certain angle in particular patterns depending on the facial region and resurfaces skin on a much deeper and more effective level than shaving.

What if I have acne?

The first course of action is to schedule a facial with one of our skilled aestheticians who will assess your condition and recommend the best treatment. We don’t generally recommend dermaplaning acneic skin. Microdermabrasion is another form of manual exfoliation that may be more appropriate depending on your skin type.

Can I get dermaplaning if I’m pregnant?

Yes, dermaplaning is perfectly safe if you’re pregnant or nursing and want a deep exfoliation without the more aggressive options like chemical peels. It helps keep your skin clean and clear of superficial hyperpigmentation that can occur during hormonal fluctuations as well.
